The use of wearable technology in capturing vital signs

Writer: Keith ChessellKeith Chessell

At Whzan, we understand the importance of medical data when it comes to providing the highest levels of care in virtual wards and hospital at home. Our standard Blue Box enables most patients to measure their own vital signs at home, which are then relayed to the triaging dashboard monitored by clinicians.

Whzan’s Blue Box enables the capture of blood pressure, oxygen saturation, pulse, respiration rate and temperature.  These are used to calculate the National Early Warning Score NEWS2 which can indicate health status and deterioration. NEWS2 was created by the Royal College of Physicians and used throughout the NHS.

Wearable options for those who need it

However, some patients cannot manage the measurement process because of frailty or health condition.  Whzan has a wide range of wearable options including certified medical instrumentation and integration with smart watches.

A medically certified wearable patch is able to capture a continuous ECG along with body temperature, pulse and respiration rate.  Data is sent to a Whzan tablet which relays it on to the Whzan dashboard. Simple to apply the device will provide continuous data for a week.  The device is shower proof and the patient can leave home without the tablet for periods of up to 8 hours, without loss of data.

For less precise measurements, but still capable of showing trends, smart watches are a Whzan option.  They can provide estimates for a range of vital signs along with a step count, which can be indicative of health condition. Trends of this data give a very good overview of recovery or deterioration. The tablet also has a library of health assessments.

Whzan’s real-time remote health monitoring system has a solution for all patients whether at home alone, helped by domiciliary carers or in a care home.  The triaging dashboard was designed by clinicians for clinicians, enabling them to efficiently monitor large patient cohorts. When alerts occur, they are visually indicated and prioritised.  Whzan health alerts can generate events enabling alarm receiving centres to act on out-of-hours problems.

As with everything we do, there are lots of options/solutions to match any healthcare setting. Please drop us a line for a chat about your unique situation.
